COLONIAL NARRATIVE
1830, European settlers began flocking to the island for pastoral uses, such as, farming as well as fishing and salt harvesting
1839, Rottnest Island was proposed to be used as an island prison to solve security problems as well as allowing a certain degree of freedom for the native prisoners who found difficulty in understanding reasons for their confinement and frequently escaped.
1904, Rottnest Island ceased the operation of its prison.
Limestone were readily available and quarried for construction
purposes, with notable limestone buildings concentrated at the Main Settlement, such as, the Salt Store and the old hay store, currently the Rottnest Island Museum.
