ABORIGINAL NARRATIVE
During the last ice age (6000-7000 years ago), Wadjemup was
an important meeting place for the Whadjuk Ngoongar people as it was considered as a ceremonial site
Wadjemup, “place across the water where the spirits are”
A transition place for spirits after death and before moving onto the afterlife
Strong easterly winds carry spirits in a cleansing smoke, from the land across the sea
Spirits then sit on a special tree, “mudjar”
When ready to move on, spirits embark on a journey to the western horizon on the back of the spirit whale
