Rottnest Island was a relatively unchartered land in the maps of explorers and ship wreckages are not foreign in the surrounding waters.

In 1848, a Pilot Station was erected to aid in naval navigation in
response to the dangerous coral reefs.

In 1899, the City of York shipwreck that claimed 11 lives, including Captain Jones himself, catalysed the urgency of constructing a second lighthouse at Bathurst Point, the Bathurst Lighthouse.

This eventually created a subtle relationship between the two sites, City of York Bay and the Bathurst Lighthouse.

KEY PLACES: Bathurst Point, Pinky Beach
